Basics that are needed to start an embroidery project

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced stitcher, starting a new embroidery project requires some basic supplies. In this article, we will discuss the bare basics of essentials needed to start an embroidery project.

A huge plus point of hand embroidery is that it is a very affordable art form and that you don’t need much to get going:

List of embroidery essentials
Fabric
Needles
Embroidery Thread
Hoop
Scissors

Fabric

The first and most important item you will need for your embroidery project is fabric. Choose a fabric that is suitable for your design and comfortable to work with. The most commonly used fabrics for beginners are cotton, linen and evenweave. These fabrics are easy to work with and come in a variety of colors and textures.

As you gain experience you will learn that you can embroider on any fabric you can get a needle comfortably through.  I use poly-cotton for all the samples you see throughout this website.  It is easy to work with but only suitable for something you will frame as it won’t survive repeated washing.

Needles

Embroidery needles come in various sizes and types. Choose a needle size that is appropriate for your fabric and thread. Thicker fabrics worked with thicker thread will require larger, blunt needles, while thinner fabrics worked with only one or two strands of thread will need thinner sharp point needles.

My rule of thumb is that the thread I plan to use must fit through the needle opening.  Thinner fabric need sharper needles and thicker fabric needs thicker, more blunt needles.

Embroidery Thread

I’m a bit of a thread purist and only work with DMC floss and crochet cotton threads.  It is easy to find in most craft shops, affordable and provides a quality experience all the way.

The colors don’t bleed or fade and it can be washed without any problems.  An embroidery piece made with DMC thread will literally last a lifetime and more if you look after it.

Hoop

An embroidery hoop is a circular frame that holds the fabric taut while you stitch. It is available in a wide range of sizes.  The size you will need is indicated in the pattern you purchased.

A hoop keeps the fabric stretched tight, making it easier to stitch and preventing puckering or distortion.  Simply put, it is a game changer.

Scissors

Scissors are essential for embroidery as they are used to trim threads and to cut fabric. Choose a pair of sharp, high-quality fabric scissors that are comfortable to hold. It is important to keep your scissors sharp, to prevent fraying or tearing of the fabric.

In conclusion, starting an embroidery project requires some basic supplies such as fabric, needles, embroidery thread, embroidery hoop, and scissors.  All of these items are easy to find and very affordable.
