How to make a
Crossed Blanket stitch
Also known as:
Crossed buttonhole stitch, Cross buttonhole stitch
The crossed blanket stitch is a variation of the basic blanket stitch. It will be helpful to know how a blanket stitch and a closed blanket stitch are made when learning how to make this stitch.
It is handy to use on edges and borders and adds more sturdiness to areas where you would have used the basic blanket stitch.
I like the repeating diamond patterns it creates and that it can be used as a hand-worked over locker stitch on seams.

Step by step
Follow along and you will very soon be able to do the crossed blanket stitch.
This stitch requires you to work in a block as you will need 4 corners to place your needle in to create the cross pattern.
Start by threading your needle with embroidery floss. Knot the end of the floss.
Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric, where you want to start your stitch. Make sure the knot is on the backside of the fabric.
Insert the needle back into the fabric across from where you started (the opposite corner of the block.)
Gently pull until there is a small loop. Bring the needle up from the back next (to the right) to where you started. Pull gently until the first leg of the cross lays flat.
Insert the needle back into the fabric at the bottom (left bottom corner of the box.)
Pull gently but leave a small loop. Bring the needle up (inside the loop) from the bottom at the opposite side (top right hand corner of the box.)
This finishes the first block of the stitch.
Begin the next step by repeating the previous steps. Gently pull until the the cross lays flat. Insert the needle at the opposite end (bottom right hand corner.) Leave a small loop. Bring the needle up from the bottom (top left hand side of box) inside the loop.
Leave a small loop. Insert the needle next to the bottom left side of the previous cross.
Keep on repeating the steps of the first block.
To end this stitch, insert the needle next to where you where you came out at the end of a complete ‘box’ stitch.
Tie the thread off at the back.
Done!
