Extended Fly stitch

Extended fly stitch link

The extended fly stitch is a variation of the traditional fly stitch in that in looks like a ‘Y’, which is often used in embroidery to create floral and leaf designs and also makes handy fillers.

The main difference between the two stitches is that the anchor stitch that holds the top loop in place is short and barely visible in the basic fly stitch and is long for the extended fly stitch.

The method to make the two stitches is the same, the bottom anchor is just longer for the extended stitch.

Step 1:
Bring the needle up from the back of the fabric at the starting point for your stitch.

Step 2:
Push the needle down through the fabric about 2 stitch lengths away (to the right) from the starting point. Pull gently but be careful to leave a loop of thread on the surface of the fabric.

Step 3:
Bring the needle back up at where you want the bottom of the loop to be, at the inside of the loop.

Step 4:
Go over the loop and make a long stitch to anchor the Y in place. This should form a Y shape with the long stitch being the stem and the loop forming the wings of the Y.

Step 5:
Once you have completed all your stitches, tie off the thread on the back of the fabric.
