How to
Blanket stitch
Also known as:
Buttonhole stitch
The blanket stitch was traditionally used for edging and finishing of handmade blankets, keeping edges tidy while adding a lovely touch.
You can keep things simple by using the same color thread as your blanket for a seamless look or make it fun with a contrasting color for a pop of personality!
Or course, things have changed and we are using this stitch for so much more today. Think along the lines of applique projects and pretty flowers or even shell like shapes.

1. Start by threading your needle with embroidery floss. I used 2 stands in this example. Knot the end of the floss.
Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric, where you want to start your stitch.
2. Insert the needle into the fabric about 2-3 stitch lengths away, at the bottom, to the right.
3. Gently pull the floss until a small loop is formed. Insert the needle into the loop, in line with the top stitch, about 2 stitch lengths away.
4. Pull gently until you have an upside down L shape.
5. Insert the needle at the bottom to start the next stitch.
6. Continue stitching, working your way along your design. Make sure to keep your stitches evenly spaced and consistent in length.
