How to do a

Stem stitch

Stem stitch sample

Learn to make the much used stem on this page.  Stem stitches are used to create a raised line to form stems, lines or texture on fabric.

They are created by making smallish diagonal stitches that follow the direction of the line you want to create.

They are often used to create the stems and branches of flowers and trees in embroidery.  They can also be used to create outlines, lettering and other designs.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced embroiderer, the stem stitch is a great technique to add to your arsenal.  It is easy to do and you will never run out of uses for this handy stitch.

Watch my short video to see a demonstration of how a stem stitch is done.

If you are having trouble opening the video viewer below, kindly follow this link to watch the video on Youtube.

Please note that the loop of the thread should be held towards (not away from) your body.  It seems the other way round in the video due to the angle of the camera.

Step by step

Follow along and you will very soon master this easy stem stitch.

1. Start by threading your needle with embroidery floss. You can use a single strand for a delicate line or multiple strands for a thicker line. Knot the end of the floss.

2. Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric, where you want to start your stitch. Make sure the knot is on the backside of the fabric.

3. Insert your needle back into the fabric, a stitch length away from where you came up. It is very important to keep the length of your stitches even as you go along.  Leave the thread to form a small loop.

4. Bring your needle back up through the fabric in the middle of the previous stitch.  Pull gently so that the loop is now laying flat on the fabric.

5. Insert the needle a stitch length away and once again leave the thread to form a small loop.  Make sure to keep your stitches evenly spaced and consistent in length.  Continue until the end of the line you want to cover with this stitch.

6. To finish, bring your needle to the back of the fabric and tie off your thread.
