How to make a
Closed fly stitch leaf
The closed fly stitch is perfect for creating leaves as the anchor stitch in the middle creates the impression of a stem.

Step by step
Follow along and you will very soon master the handy closed fly stitch leaf.
Step 1:
Bring the needle up from the back of the fabric at the end point of the leaf.
Step 2:
Push the needle down through the fabric about 1 stitch length away along the stem from the starting point.
Step 3:
Bring the needle back up to the left (or right) slightly below your first stitch starting point. Follow along the drawn line of the leaf.
Step 4:
Insert the needle on the opposite side of the stem but don’t pull the thread through the fabric. Leave a loop.
Step 5:
Come back up from the back where the stem ended. Pull on the loop until the stitch sits next to the previous stitch. Anchor it in place by pushing the needle into the fabric on the other side of the loop.
Step 6:
Continue by following the outline of the pattern until the leaf is formed.
Step 7:
Once you have completed all your stitches, tie off the thread on the back of the fabric.
