How to make a

Running stitch

Running stitch

The running stitch is one of the basic stitches used to create simple curves and lines but can also be used as handy fillers.  It is also known as a gathering stitch as it easily gathers fabric if you pull on the thread.

Step 1: Start the Stitch
Bring your needle up through the fabric from the backside. Pull the thread all the way through until the knot at the end of the thread stops the thread from coming through.

Step 2: Make the Stitches
Bring the needle back down through the fabric, a short distance from the starting point. Then, bring the needle back up through the fabric, the same distance as the previous stitch. Repeat this process, making sure that the stitches are of equal length and evenly spaced apart.

Step 3: Continue Stitching
Continue making running stitches until you have reached the end of the area you want to stitch. You can make straight lines, curves, or any other shapes with running stitches.

Step 4: Tie off the Thread
Once you have finished your running stitches, tie off the thread on the back of the fabric.
