Satin stitch leaf

Satin stitch leaf 11

If you need to make leaves and need an easy stitch to do it, this is for you.  As you can see in the sample picture, the satin stitch is as simple as placing long straight stitches next to each other.

The satin stitch makes a pretty leaf and always looks good wherever you use it. Watch the video below or follow along with the step-by-step tutorial to quickly master it.

1. Start by threading your needle with embroidery floss. I used 6 strands of DMC thread, double it up and make a knot at the end.  Doubled up, you will have 12 strands to work with.  Make sure to use 2x the length of thread you will usually use as you will be doubling it up.

2. Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric, at the outer end of the leaf

3. Insert your needle back into the fabric, a long stitch length down the stem line.  .

4. Bring your needle back up through the fabric next to where you started at the outer tip of the leaf.  Insert your needle back into the fabric just under the previous stitch on the stem line.

5.  Repeat the same at the opposite side of the leaf and insert the thread back just below the previous stitch on the stem line.

6. Continue this process, working your way along the curved outline of the leaf until the leaf is made.   Do not leave open spaces between stitches.

6. To finish, bring your needle to the back of the fabric and tie off your thread.
