How to

Mirror Blanket stitch

The mirror blanket stitch is one of the many variations of the basic blanket stitch.  It is easy to do and makes a simple stitch look more refined and complex.

It can be used to finish and secure pretty edging and borders but really shines when used for applique work.

I’ve even used it to make a simple blanket stitch flower look more interesting.

1. Start by threading your needle with embroidery floss. I used 2 strands. Knot the end of the floss.

Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric, where you want to start your stitch.

2. Insert your needle back into the fabric at the bottom of where the next stitch will be. Keep in mind that it is important to keep the length of your stitches even as you go along.

3.  Pull gently, leaving a small hoop at the top.  Come up from the bottom of the fabric (at the top) with your needle in line with the bottom stitch.

4. Make a small stitch to the right to keep your previous stitch in place.

5. Come up from the bottom, to the right to the bottom stitch.

6. Pull the needle through the anchor stitch.

7. Start with the next stitch at the bottom – a wide stitch length away.

8.  Repeat the previous stitch until you have finished a line of stitches.
